Dr. Robert Cantu, a leading expert on sports concussions, recommends that kids not play football before the age of 14. He also says banning headers in football and body checking in hockey before the age of 14 will help. When it comes to the vast knowledge of concussions and medical research that we know today, we cannot simply forget about it, we must act. For the sake of our children we cannot afford any more negligent behavior. We need to address the questions now. As far as we know now, do we want to put a child in a sport where he regularly hits his head? In hockey children play contact sports that involve body control as early as age 11 and 12, even if they know they are considering taking it to 13, it will make a lot of difference. Children's brains are still developing at that age, and suffering a concussion at a young age can have a significant impact on their development.
