Industrial Revolution DBQThe impact of the Industrial Revolution was a positive experience for some, but was a great difficulty for others. As calls for reform and worker protection arose, the government and unions began to gain traction. Thus the evils of the industrial revolution were addressed in England in the 18th and 19th centuries. Trade unions are voluntary associations that workers join. The Combination Act of 1800, which hindered the growth of labor unions, states that the object of any worker joining any union should not be to obtain an advance on wages, or to decrease or alter hours, or to influence any else to quit his job. . Any worker who has done so will be locked up in prison (Doc 1). Although the Combination Act of 1800 prevented the growth of unions, Ralph Chaplin believes that a worker should join the union. He states that there can be no greater power under the sun than unions, which make it strong (Doc 2). Since there are so many workers working in poor conditions, labor laws have come into action. The Health and Morals Act of 1802 restricted children under fourteen from working more than twelve hours a day (Doc 3). The Factor Act of 1833, which stated that no person under the age of 18 could work on machinery at night (Doc 4). It allowed those under 18 to work fewer than 12 hours a day or fewer than 69 hours in a week. There was a ten-hour law, which stated that the maximum working day limit for women and children was 10 hours. Socialism is one of the roles of government in the economy. Adam Smith, who is the father of capitalism, believes in laissez-faire, in “hands off” the government. He believes that all produce should be sold at the lowest possible price. (Doc 5) While Adam Smith believes in capitalism, Engel criticizes it. Engel believes that capitalism takes over everything, but not the poor, who are left with nothing. (Doc 7) Karl Marx, the author of a 23-page pamphlet, "The Communist Manifesto", and Engels recommend that all workers of all countries unite and be equal, overthrow all existing social conditions.
