Janie calls the African American people "all against her" and during the trial it becomes clear that the African Americans believe she is guilty. The most ironic part of the novel, towards the end, "The white women cried and stood around her like a protective wall and the black men, with their heads bowed, dragged themselves out and walked away." (Their eyes were looking at God) The white women are there with Janie, crying and comforting her, while the African Americans walk away with their backs turned
