Topic > Exploring My Nationalities - 1630

I have the advantage of belonging to two nationalities, Trinidadian and Haitian. Last summer I had the opportunity to explore each. I was six years old when I left Trinidad to come to the United States. Sometimes, when I try to remember the country I was born in, I only have an empty memory of it. I always told myself that when I grew up I would come home for a visit. I have already achieved my goal of visiting Haiti, where my mother was born. Trinidad was next on my list, since I was tired of my mother and other family members telling me about the beauty of Trinidad. Last summer was a beautiful and emotional memory that will never be forgotten. Never forget where your nature is rooted, because those who belong to different cultures enrich our society, making our world exciting. Whenever my grandmother and I talked, she always asked me "Boy, Wenya, will she come home"? And I tell her "it's coming soon". Trinidadians speak broken English, almost like Jamaicans, but much clearer. Finally, the day of departure for Trinidad arrived on August 1st. I decided to go alone so I could get to know the country, spending time with old friends and family. It was a personal visit; It had been eighteen years since I had returned home. It felt like a reunion with a loved one. I stayed up for two days counting the time until my trip. The night before my flight felt like the night before the first day of high school, I was so anxious for the day to begin. I planned my outfit and was very serious about preparing for my trip. My dream finally came true because even though I have many relatives in Trinidad, I am the closest to my grandmother and it has been four years since I last saw her. Excitement coursed through my veins. I was about to leave and my eyes were red with blood from lack of sleep for the last two days. It was time to escape my hectic work days in Spring Valley and enter the new, relaxed environment of a tropical paradise for an entire month. I took off at 5pm and took a much needed nap during the five hour flight.
