Although illegal immigration is against federal law, many states feel that the government is not doing a good job of enforcing it. Some states, like Arizona, have come up with their own attempt to compensate for this problem. In 2010, Arizona established the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (SB 1070), a law that allows police to stop anyone who is “suspicious” and ask for proof of their legal status, in order to prevent crime. illegal immigration. The people who would be stopped for this are those of color, of course, which makes them more susceptible to racial profiling and will violate the rights of real US citizens. According to the American Academy of Political and Social Science, laws like this bill, which target and mistreat minorities, are viewed as unjust by the public. Citizen cooperation is part of the reason why law enforcement is able to do its job so well, but when citizens feel the law is unjust, they don't cooperate, meaning the police won't be able to carry out their task (Kirk et al). The federal government relies on states to enforce immigration laws, while states rely on police to locate illegal immigrants, who then rely on citizens who refuse to hire and report them (Kraehenbuehlt).
