Topic > Collectivism vs. Collectivism - 1014

We must work for this ourselves and strive for greatness by pursuing our own self-interest. By relying on the state, our success will be directly proportional to theirs. Once their success collapses, so will ours. An example that perfectly illustrates this perspective is the “Grest Leap Forward” in China in 1958. This idea was intended to develop and expand China's agriculture and industry. To make this work, China has adopted a collectivist idea called “communes,” in which a group of people work as one and share responsibilities. They no longer worked for themselves but worked as a collective. The idea of a welfare state is similar to what the government is able to provide to its citizens. Essential needs such as healthcare, schools and nurseries have been met. The elderly were cared for so that everyone who could work could work. However, as grand as it sounds, the consequences have been fulfilled. The government collapsed and the people could no longer support themselves as they gave away everything they owned. Over 40 million people died. While this example is extreme, it illustrates the idea that collectivism creates a domino effect in an economy. Once the wall everyone is leaning on collapses, everyone falls with it
