The media has always played an influential role in our society. Starting centuries ago with newspapers and flyers, the news media have been the primary source for society to share and learn about important events. It has the ability, especially with today's technical advances, to provide information to large numbers of people quickly and efficiently, thus having the potential for great influential power. However, the information disseminated is not always accurate for various reasons, including personal agendas and government pressures. Instead of helping to fully inform society, the media has often caused society to be misinformed and unknowingly ignorant about many events and situations. Through media censorship, disinformation, through the withholding of information and by neglecting to provide the whole truth to the public, the news media deprives society of the information it deserves, thus making it less informed and aware. In an analysis of media coverage in Russia and the United States, written by Olga Lazitski, there is an explanation of the omission resulting from “government pressure, market pressure (ratings), or simply a journalist's lack of education.” . (904) Lazitski continues and refers to an article about suicides in the US military that never received any large-scale media coverage. This situation could be an example of omission due to government pressure, perhaps the result of the government wanting to temper a negative view on the pressures of the military lifestyle. Through the omission of this information, the company has been censored from the entire truth about the prevalence of suicide in the US military. People in society therefore continue to draw false conclusions and assumptions out of unconscious ignorance, perhaps the conclusions that the media wants their viewers to believe. This is just one example of how the news media can use censorship to deprive society of certain types of information by keeping it misinformed. The withholding of information through censorship is a tool frequently used by the news media. The news media do not always omit information, they also have the ability to publish inaccurate information to unknowingly persuade their viewers, holding them back badly.
