Topic > Cooperation and Conflict in the Story of Henrietta Lacks

Mistrust between the African American community and white medicine was a factor long before Henrietta, but her story certainly contributed to the long history. If Henrietta had been white, I'm pretty sure she would be a national hero and historical figure. Through this course it was the first time I came across this story, but I want to know more. If the cure for cancer is ever found, it would be fair to give Henrietta more than half the credit. However, we are still making strides towards racial equality as it goes hand in hand with informed consent. We need to educate more African Americans about what informed consent is so that there are no more cases like Henrietta's. You have the right to know what is or is not done to your body, and you should have the ability to not only decide your own fate, but also understand the pros and cons of each.
