Topic > American Civil War Battle Nurses - 1185

During the American Civil War, "More than twenty thousand women in the Union and Confederate states were engaged in relief work..." (Schultz, 2004). These women had certain professional rights and responsibilities to support during the Civil War. They broke from common Victorian American tradition and volunteered as Civil War nurses, something that amazed the nation (USAHEC.org). However, these battle aids treated wounded soldiers and performed other duties, these women were not immediately accepted by male doctors in hospitals. Some male physicians viewed women as useless (Barton, 1892) and that they “intruded on their domain and used up scarce resources” (Freemon, 1998). In the power struggle between doctors and nurses, nurses soon became known as “The Nurses, Comforters and Saviors of Men.” (Barton, 1892). Shortly after the Civil War began, both sides realized they were understaffing their hospitals. Usually, “A working woman was an object of pity or contempt in Victorian America.” (USAHEC.org). Women usually dedicated their lives to caring for their husbands and children; creating a beautiful and clean home (The History Channel Website, 2013), it was only in their homes and for their family members (Egenes, 2009). The Civil War was the first time women actually played a major role in a war effort (The History Channel Website, 2013). When they discovered that each side needed nurses, the women immediately began volunteering to “help their side's war efforts” (Freemon, 1998). Most women focused on helping wounded and sick soldiers (Freemon, 1998). . half of the document ......rgingcivilwar.com/2013/09/03/civil-war-nurses-series-interesting-facts-about-northern-nurses/This is a side article about women nurses during the Civil War Ho used a table on this page for information on the various jobs and positions held by women.
