The poem by Robert Burns is a poem he wrote about how he wants to help children stay pure as they mature into adulthood. Holder, in this sense, interprets today's world in the same way, but unfortunately does not look realistically at the process by which children grow up. In the theme of this story Holden has his superficial perception of how he wants to save the children. from the real world where adults are confronted with hypocrisy and superficiality in everyday life. The reason for this is because Holden has been victimized and excluded from the world around him. Has the feeling of not fitting in or belonging to society. Holden is considered different and alienated as this would be one of his defense mechanisms. Holden therefore has the impression that his ways make him better than other people around him and therefore does not feel the need to socialize with the rest of society. In all honesty, Holden is overwhelmed by the presence of people as he never feels welcome in society. It leads people to believe that it has a sense of superiority but what they don't know is that this is one of its defense mechanisms to keep them away. The main theme of this story is the fear of losing innocence as a child. All in all this helps him maintain a sense of stability in his life. Holden's pain is mainly due to the fact that he alienates himself from society. Holden doesn't speak or show any emotion but still longs for love and contact from a partner or friend even if his walls don't allow it. He struggles to let anyone in because he doesn't know who he can and cannot trust. He pushes people away with insults and hurtful comments so as not to let them in and protect himself from further disappointment and hurt. Unfortunately I got... halfway through the paper... at some point. Allie was Holden's 'catcher in the rye' in my opinion and didn't know who else would guide him through the trials and tribulations of the adult world. In conclusion, Holden struggles to let go of the past and has many desires, but his deepest desire is to protect children from the adult world and ensure that they maintain their innocence. In the above-mentioned statements he portrays his deepest desire and shows how the theme is developed in the novel. The title very cleverly reveals the punchline of the book. Holden wants to be the dream catcher for every child, yet he doesn't have one of his own. In short, the catcher in the rye is a kind of guardian angel, but Holden has a different perception of the meaning. This book has a surprising ending because it simply describes that every person needs a catcher in the rye and if we have one, we are truly blessed.
