“There is no such thing as pure pleasure; a certain anxiety always accompanies it” Ovid teaches. (Andy 24) This means that pleasure cannot be achieved easily; he needs anxiety to push himself beyond limits and overcome fear. Collier, a freelance writer with more than six hundred articles to his credit, published an article, “Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name.” He uses his personal experience and shows that we can overcome anxiety. In the article “Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name,” Collier explains that anxiety is a very common part of our lives and overcoming it instead of backing away is the only way to grow. . Collier uses personal experiences and shows his audience how he dealt with his anxiety which taught him lessons for the future. He was given the opportunity to travel with his roommate to Argentina, to work on a ranch. Collier had rejected the offer, as he had already thought about teaching his brother to sail. By declining this opportunity, Collier learned a valuable lesson and developed a rule for himself: “do what makes you anxious; Don't do what makes you depressed." ( Collier 95)When Collier was in graduate school, he began writing articles for magazines and interviewing big names. Before each interview, he would get butterflies in his stomach and his hands would start to shake (Collier 95). At one time, Collier had an interview with a musician he admired, Duke Ellington. During the interview, Collier had discovered that Duke still had stage fright despite having been performing for more than thirty years. He had benefited from and discovered a process that psychologists call “extinction”. (Collier 97) Hence his second rule: “you will never eliminate anxiety by avoiding the things that cause it.” (Collier 97)In all its li...... middle of paper ......you want to overcome the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.”(llyana 27)In conclusion, facing the Anxiety in life is normal. Anxiety pushes a person to work harder and overcome any obstacle. As Collier said “you can't learn if you don't try”. (Collier 97) To summarize, the road to success is paved with anxiety.
