I have always been of the opinion that schools have a greater impact on children than imparting knowledge acquired from books. Of equal importance to regular interaction between teachers and students is counseling in schools. The benefits associated with consultancy are; students are better able to deal with psychological problems, peer relationship issues are taught, and it provides a bridge between the administration and students (Wright, 2012). With this knowledge, I ventured to interview a counselor and gain insight into school counseling. I learned that school counselors help improve, maintain, and enhance emotional, social, physical, and mental fitness and develop lifelong learning. I appreciate the role and challenges school counselors face and the work they do in our schools (Sciarra, 2004). Scope of the Counselor's Role The first thing I learned is that the role of the school counselor is to identify and understand the issues facing students. Students face many problems that hinder their studies. They range from psychological problems encountered mainly at home to the school environment. This also covers the area of student drug abuse. In addition to understanding the issues, the school counselor must have multicultural skills. This means that the counselor should be aware of the wide range of cultures represented inside and outside the school (Dahir & Stone, 2012). This will lay the foundation for developing skills used for identifying and understanding problems. In this way a principal is able, for example, to understand why students behave in a certain way or have a high view of things that others overlook (Wright, 2012). The consultant is a leader and in this way should be able to participate effectively..... . middle of paper...... J.C., & Hatch, T. (2007).
