Niger, home to the free-flowing Niger River, is a nation in sub-Saharan West Africa. Unfortunately, it is an extremely poor country because part of the country is desert and less than 3% is open to crops. The current economic situation is bleak at best. Yet, the vibrant tradition and history of this country lives on today in its tribes and people, despite all its adversities. From severe droughts to military coups to dysfunctional government, the culture has remained strong. Niger has few natural resources and even less arable land and needs help from many countries. Niger receives the majority of imports from France; however, they receive much-needed help from donations as sixty-four percent of Nigerians live in poverty. For example, used clothing is a large import, along with medicines. With so many diseases and one doctor for every 41,500 patients, medicine is a coveted object. Other goods imported into Niger are roll tobacco, radioactive chemicals and petroleum products. Niger is a country rich in uranium. Uranium is one of the heaviest natural metals in the world. It is 18.7 times denser than water. It's full of energy and that's why they use it in nuclear bombs. They also export peas and onions. Niger is 80% desert and provides no natural resources or water availability, although the Niger River is a huge resource for Niger. With its beautiful sparkling water flowing southwest in a crescent shape, it is a place of relief. Along this river there are wonderful areas for agriculture and grazing and you can find the most populous city and capital of Niger called Niamey.
